Temporary Works

vector-1-15

Our focus and understanding in this area is second to none. We have always recognised that the success, cost and timescales of the project and largely dictated by the temporary works. The temporary works are simply the works required to allow the enabling, demolition, excavation and installation of the permanent works. Where possible our team will aim to include as much of the permanent works as possible at temporary works stage to ease the cross over further into the programme. From temporary piles, kings posts, RMD frames, temporary needles and steels BH Basements take a holistic view of the project to ensure the design is correctly considered and executed. The temporary works are assessed throughout by our in house temporary works engineers, temporary works co-ordinators and temporary works supervisors.

What is Temporary Works?

Temporary works, also known as temporary structures or temporary construction, are essential components in the construction industry. These are temporary structures, supports, facade retention earth work supports or processes put in place during construction projects to enable the safe and efficient execution of the work. Here are some common purposes for which BHB utilises temporary works in construction:

Safety

Temporary works are often erected to ensure the safety of workers, the public, and adjacent structures during construction activities. This includes scaffolding, edge protection, shoring, and access platforms.

Support

Temporary supports such as scaffolding, formwork, falsework, and propping are used to support structures during construction until they can support themselves. They ensure that structures remain stable during construction and until permanent supports are installed.

Access

Temporary access structures like scaffolding and ramps provide safe and efficient access for workers to different areas of the construction site, including elevated areas or difficult-to-reach spaces.

Construction process facilitation

Temporary works aid in carrying out specific construction processes. For instance, formwork is used to shape concrete during pouring, temporary roads that may be constructed to facilitate movement of heavy equipment, and temporary bracing may be installed to stabilize structures during construction.

Construction logistics

Temporary works also include facilities for construction logistics such as site offices, storage areas, and temporary fencing to manage the flow of materials and personnel on-site.

Utilities

Temporary utilities like temporary power supply, water supply, and drainage systems are often set up to support construction activities until permanent utilities are installed.

Testing and monitoring

Temporary works may include instrumentation and monitoring systems to assess the performance of structures during construction or to gather data for quality control purposes.

Environmental protection

Temporary works can also be used to implement erosion control measures, contain pollutants, or protect environmentally sensitive areas during construction as many of the projects bhb are involved in have environmental restrictions such as Tpo’s (tree protection orders).

In summary, temporary works play a crucial role in construction projects by ensuring safety, supporting construction activities, facilitating access, managing logistics, and protecting the environment until permanent structures are in place.
